Only because the Japanese public pretty much had a "They went where? What idiots!" attitude. The Japanese government didn't really have a reason to push too hard to get them back.

The Japanese are also limited by having no offensive military capabilities due to constitutional limitations instituted post WWII. Their government had no options to try to get the hostages released outside of asking other countries for help.

You know what I like about ISIS? They're legitimately evil. Like, true evil, and because of that, I could go and stab one, right in the face, or put a bullet in his head, and everyone would just go...we're ok with that.

They may try to hide behind a religious ideology, but even people of the same religion think they're fucking nuts! They're really baddies! There's no shade of grey at all! They're the Nazis of the 21st century!

In reality, though, I'd just say that I'd make fun of them. Laugh at them, mock them, use them as troll-bait, jump around them, say "TROLOLOL!" at them.
